Care of the body

There are several points to keep in mind at this stage:

  • Treat the body with the same respect you would a living person.  
  • Ask the family’s permission to remove any remaining medical equipment.

  • Ask the family if there’s a special blanket they’d like to place over the person. Leave their face visible unless the family prefers otherwise.

  • Invite the family to spend time with the body if they would like; this may be the last time they see, touch or hold the person.

Washing the body

In some cultures and religions, it’s customary to wash the body. If the family asks you to participate and you feel uncomfortable doing so, simply say:
