Chapter 4: When you're concerned

Resources for the paramedic

Talking with someone outside the family about the stresses of work is often a good option. Informal and professional supports include:

  • A Peer Support Program.

  • The family doctor.

  • A partner-paramedic or close friend, in or outside of work.

  • A trusted supervisor, instructor, or mentor.

  • A professional counsellor or therapist, perhaps through an Employee Assistance Program.

  • A leader or member of a faith or spiritual community.

Some paramedics are extremely reluctant to access help. Offer to accompany them to the first meeting if that would make it easier for them.
