The career of a paramedic carries with it unavoidable traumas that can lead to a wide range of responses, including compassion fatigue, isolation, and poor health. Understanding and supporting the paramedic in your life may be challenging at times, but is always worthwhile.
There are several ways to engage with paramedics experiencing stress and grief. Fostering ways for them to meaningfully connect with you and other important people may prevent some of the more problematic outcomes. Remember that paramedics often want and need to talk, but may be constrained by a desire to protect their families from the traumas of this work. A healthy middle ground, personal and unique to each family, can be found through open and supportive conversations.
