Chapter 2: Operational factors
Introduction
You may encounter additional challenges
in your palliative care practice based on the work environment and practice
setting. Expectations to have short scene times, assumptions that all patients
will be transported to hospital, and high call volumes with limited time to
decompress between calls all
make the paramedic work environment unique when compared to other practice
settings where palliative care may be delivered. If you're a paramedic working in a rural setting, you may also have to contend with longer travel times to reach patients, as well as pre-existing relationships with them and their families.
Refer to your community guidelines, which will outline policies and procedures for contacting other health care providers (for consultation).
