Chapter 3: Transport
When the family resists
“I promised to keep him at home until the end. I can’t break this promise. I owe it to him.” - Spouse
Occasionally the best course of action is to transport the patient to a health facility. This can be a major upset for families who sometimes experience tremendous guilt when this happens. Always try to collaborate with the family and with the health care team.
"I know the plan was for him to stay at home but his symptoms have become too severe to control here. When you made your promise, it was because you wanted what was best for him. That hasn’t changed. Our goal is to make him as comfortable as possible and now the best place to do that is in a facility. There’s nothing you could have done to prevent this."
